Phosphorylated Tau

Meaning

Phosphorylated Tau refers to the Tau protein that has been excessively modified by the addition of phosphate groups, a state known as hyperphosphorylation. Tau is a microtubule-associated protein primarily found in neurons, where it normally stabilizes the cellular cytoskeleton. In hormonal health, the balance of phosphorylation is critical, as its dysregulation is strongly linked to neurodegenerative diseases, which are often comorbid with endocrine aging and imbalances. This hyperphosphorylated state causes Tau to detach from microtubules and aggregate into neurofibrillary tangles, disrupting neuronal transport and leading to cellular dysfunction.
