Phospholipase C

Meaning

Phospholipase C (PLC) is a critical family of ubiquitous intracellular enzymes that plays a pivotal role in signal transduction pathways, functioning as a key intermediary in relaying signals from various cell-surface receptors to the interior of the cell. This enzyme specifically catalyzes the hydrolysis of a membrane phospholipid, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2), yielding two crucial second messenger molecules: inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG). PLC activation is essential for the cellular response to a multitude of hormones and neurotransmitters, linking external stimuli to internal biological actions.
