Phosphodiesterase 5

Meaning

Phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) is a specific metalloenzyme that belongs to a family of phosphodiesterases responsible for hydrolyzing cyclic nucleotides within the cell. Specifically, PDE5 catalyzes the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) into its inactive metabolite, GMP. This enzymatic action is particularly relevant in the smooth muscle cells of the corpus cavernosum and pulmonary vasculature, where cGMP is a key mediator of vasodilation.
