Phase Response Curves

Meaning

Phase Response Curves (PRCs) are fundamental graphical representations in chronobiology that map the magnitude and direction of a circadian rhythm shift in response to a specific zeitgeber (time-giver) administered at different points in the 24-hour cycle. The curve is a predictive clinical tool, showing whether an input, such as light or a meal, will cause a phase advance (earlier timing), a phase delay (later timing), or no shift at all. Understanding an individual’s PRC is essential for precisely timing interventions like light therapy.
