Phase II Metabolism

Meaning

Phase II metabolism, also known as conjugation, is the second major stage of xenobiotic and hormone biotransformation, primarily occurring in the liver and other tissues. This process involves covalently linking a functional group, such as glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione, to the metabolite produced in Phase I or to the parent compound itself. The primary objective is to significantly increase the compound’s polarity and molecular size, rendering it inactive and easily excretable via the bile or urine.
