Phase II Liver Detoxification

Meaning

Phase II Liver Detoxification is the second, crucial stage of hepatic biotransformation, a process essential for the clearance of steroid hormones, pharmaceutical agents, and environmental toxins from the body. During this conjugation stage, the liver chemically links the intermediate metabolites from Phase I with highly water-soluble molecules, such as glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione. This action effectively neutralizes the compounds and renders them sufficiently hydrophilic for final excretion via bile or urine.
