Phase II Liver Detox

Meaning

Phase II Liver Detoxification, or conjugation, is the second critical stage of the hepatic biotransformation process, wherein the liver prepares metabolic byproducts, toxins, and excess hormones for safe excretion from the body. During this stage, enzymes attach small, water-soluble molecules—such as glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione—to the intermediate compounds generated in Phase I. This conjugation significantly increases the compound’s polarity and solubility, ensuring it can be effectively eliminated via the bile or urine. Proper Phase II function is essential for maintaining hormonal homeostasis, particularly the efficient clearance of estrogen metabolites.
