Phase II Conjugation

Meaning

Phase II Conjugation is the second stage of the liver’s biotransformation system, following Phase I, where a reactive intermediate metabolite is chemically linked (conjugated) to a hydrophilic, endogenous molecule, such as glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione. This crucial enzymatic process significantly increases the water solubility and molecular weight of the compound, effectively neutralizing its biological activity and preparing it for efficient excretion from the body via bile or urine. It is vital for detoxifying and clearing steroid hormone metabolites.
