Pharmacological Replacement

Meaning

Pharmacological Replacement is a therapeutic strategy involving the administration of exogenous, standardized compounds, which may be synthetic or bioidentical, to restore the concentration of a deficient endogenous substance, most commonly a hormone, to its physiological or near-physiological range. The primary goal of this intervention is to alleviate the clinical symptoms and reverse the pathological consequences that result from an endocrine gland’s insufficient production of a key chemical messenger. Classic examples include thyroid hormone replacement therapy (THRT) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).
