Pharmacokinetic Interactions

Meaning

Pharmacokinetic interactions describe the phenomena where one pharmaceutical agent or substance alters the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion (ADME) of another substance within the body. These interactions directly affect the concentration of the active drug available to reach its target site, thereby changing its efficacy or toxicity profile. For instance, a drug that inhibits a specific liver enzyme may slow the metabolism of a co-administered hormone, leading to unexpectedly high circulating levels. Careful clinical monitoring of drug levels and enzyme activity is necessary to mitigate risks.
