PGRMC1

Meaning

PGRMC1, or Progesterone Receptor Membrane Component 1, is a critical, non-classical progesterone binding protein primarily located on the endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane of various cell types. Unlike the classical nuclear progesterone receptors, PGRMC1 mediates rapid, non-genomic actions of progesterone and other steroid hormones, influencing processes such as cell survival, metabolism, and cancer progression. Its function is crucial in reproductive tissues, the central nervous system, and the liver, acting as a molecular scaffold for various signaling complexes. PGRMC1 is recognized as a significant target in hormonal oncology and neuroendocrinology.
