PFAS

Meaning

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are a vast group of synthetic organic compounds distinguished by extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds. These bonds confer unique properties, including resistance to heat, water, and oil, making them highly persistent in both the environment and biological systems. Their recalcitrance to degradation means they can accumulate over time, leading to widespread environmental contamination.
