Peripheral Sensitization

Meaning

Peripheral sensitization describes a physiological process where primary afferent nociceptors, which are specialized sensory neurons detecting noxious stimuli, exhibit an increased excitability and responsiveness to subsequent stimuli. This change means that even normally innocuous stimuli or previously subthreshold noxious stimuli can activate these nerve endings, resulting in a heightened perception of pain. It represents an adaptive alteration in neuronal function at the site of injury or inflammation, serving to protect damaged tissue.
