Peripheral Neuropathy

Meaning

Peripheral neuropathy is a clinical syndrome characterized by damage to the peripheral nervous system, which encompasses all the nerves extending outside of the central nervous system, often resulting in debilitating symptoms like chronic pain, sensory numbness, motor weakness, and impaired coordination. Within the domain of endocrinology, this condition is recognized as a common and severe microvascular complication of chronic metabolic dysregulation, most notably in cases of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. This nerve damage profoundly diminishes the patient’s overall quality of life and functional independence.
