Peripheral Edema

Meaning

Peripheral edema is the clinical manifestation of excessive accumulation of interstitial fluid in the peripheral tissues, most commonly observed as swelling in the lower extremities, hands, and ankles. While it can be a benign symptom of prolonged standing, it often signals an underlying systemic issue related to fluid dynamics, such as venous insufficiency, cardiac dysfunction, or renal impairment. In the context of hormonal therapy, it can sometimes be an adverse effect due to the mineralocorticoid activity of certain sex steroids.
