Peripheral Conversion

Meaning

Peripheral Conversion is the crucial endocrine process where a hormone, after being released from its primary gland of origin, is enzymatically transformed into a more potent or different active hormone within various target tissues throughout the body. This mechanism allows for the localized fine-tuning of hormonal action, ensuring that tissues can independently regulate the concentration of the active hormone they require. A classic example is the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone in skin and prostate tissue.
