Perimenopausal Osteopenia

Meaning

Perimenopausal Osteopenia is a clinical condition defined by bone mineral density (BMD) that is lower than normal peak density but not yet low enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for full osteoporosis, occurring during the transitional phase leading up to menopause. This reduction in skeletal mass is primarily a consequence of the erratic and ultimately declining production of ovarian estrogen, a critical hormone for inhibiting bone resorption. Early identification of this state is vital for implementing preventative hormonal and lifestyle interventions.
