Perimenopausal Insulin Resistance

Meaning

A physiological state of reduced cellular responsiveness to the hormone insulin that emerges or significantly worsens during the perimenopausal transition, the period leading up to and immediately following menopause. This resistance results in elevated blood glucose and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, increasing the risk for metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It is a direct consequence of shifting sex steroid hormone levels and changes in body fat distribution.
