Perimenopausal Cognitive Changes

Meaning

Perimenopausal cognitive changes refer to the collection of transient or sometimes persistent alterations in cognitive function, including subjective complaints of “brain fog,” memory lapses, and reduced mental clarity, experienced by women during the hormonal transition preceding menopause. These changes are directly attributed to the fluctuations and eventual decline in ovarian steroid hormones, especially estrogen, which is a powerful neuromodulator in the brain. It is a recognized, non-pathological clinical phenomenon distinct from neurodegenerative disease.
