Perimenopausal Arrhythmia

Meaning

Perimenopausal Arrhythmia refers to the onset or exacerbation of irregular heart rhythms, or palpitations, experienced by women during the perimenopausal and menopausal transition, directly correlated with fluctuating and declining estrogen levels. These heart rhythm disturbances, often presenting as premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) or a sensation of a racing heart, are typically benign but can cause significant distress and mimic more serious cardiac conditions. The term emphasizes the endocrine-cardiac link, highlighting the critical cardioprotective role of estrogen. Clinical evaluation is necessary to distinguish these hormonal-mediated symptoms from primary heart disease.
