Perifollicular Inflammation

Meaning

Perifollicular inflammation describes a localized inflammatory state affecting the delicate tissue immediately surrounding the ovarian follicle, known as the theca and stromal layers. This condition is characterized by the infiltration of various immune cells and the excessive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the follicular microenvironment. Chronic or excessive inflammation in this area can negatively impact oocyte quality, disrupt the normal hormonal milieu, and ultimately impair successful ovulation and fertilization.
