Perifollicular Fibrosis

Meaning

Perifollicular fibrosis is a distinct pathological condition characterized by the abnormal and excessive accumulation of dense, collagenous connective tissue specifically localized around the entire circumference of the hair follicles within the dermal layer of the skin. This severe scarring process inevitably leads to the progressive constriction, distortion, and ultimate irreversible destruction of the hair follicle structure, manifesting clinically as a progressive, permanent form of hair loss known as scarring alopecia. This fibrotic change is frequently recognized as a hallmark histological feature of chronic inflammatory dermatological conditions.
