Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

Meaning

Perfluoroalkyl Substances, or PFAS, are a large, diverse class of man-made organic chemicals characterized by a unique, extremely strong carbon-fluorine bond, which confers exceptional stability and resistance to degradation in both the environment and the human body. These compounds are colloquially referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their environmental persistence and are clinically recognized as potent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Exposure to PFAS is widespread, and the primary clinical concern centers on their long-term bioaccumulation and documented potential to interfere with crucial metabolic and hormonal signaling pathways.
