Percutaneous Absorption

Meaning

The physiological process by which a substance, such as a hormone, applied to the skin surface is absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin and eventually enters the systemic circulation. This non-invasive route of administration, frequently utilized for hormone replacement therapy, advantageously bypasses the hepatic first-pass metabolism, which can significantly improve the hormone’s bioavailability and reduce the potential for liver strain compared to oral delivery. The efficiency of percutaneous absorption is a critical factor in determining the therapeutic efficacy of any topical hormonal preparation. This method provides a steady, non-pulsatile delivery of the active compound over time.
