Perceived Workplace Surveillance

Meaning

This refers to an employee’s subjective feeling of being monitored or watched in the workplace, encompassing not only direct observation but also the tracking of digital communications, performance metrics, or biometric data from wellness programs. The perception of surveillance, regardless of its objective intensity, acts as a chronic psychological stressor that triggers a sustained activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This sustained stress response can lead to elevated basal cortisol levels, impaired sleep, and a detrimental allostatic load on the body’s endocrine system.
