Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

Meaning

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, widely known as PFAS, are a large class of man-made organic compounds characterized by a strong carbon-fluorine bond, making them highly resistant to heat, water, and oil. These chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment and are often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their extreme persistence in nature and in the human body. Clinically, they are recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) due to their potential to interfere with the synthesis, metabolism, and action of endogenous hormones.
