Peptide Transporter PEPT1

Meaning

Peptide Transporter PEPT1, or Solute Carrier Family 15 Member 1 (SLC15A1), is a high-capacity, low-affinity proton-coupled transporter protein predominantly expressed on the apical membrane of enterocytes in the small intestine and in renal tubules. Its primary physiological function is the active, efficient uptake of dipeptides and tripeptides resulting from dietary protein digestion, playing a critical role in systemic nitrogen absorption and homeostasis. PEPT1 also serves as a crucial transport pathway for various peptidomimetic drugs, including certain antibiotics and prodrugs, significantly influencing their oral bioavailability and overall pharmacokinetics. The transporter’s robust activity is vital for efficient nutrient assimilation.
