Pellet Extrusion

Meaning

Pellet Extrusion is a recognized, albeit uncommon, complication of subcutaneous hormone pellet implantation therapy, characterized by the premature migration and expulsion of the hormone pellet through the skin incision site. This event disrupts the intended sustained-release pharmacokinetic profile, leading to an abrupt cessation of hormone delivery and the potential for hormonal imbalance and a recurrence of deficiency symptoms. It necessitates the prompt removal of any remaining foreign body and subsequent re-evaluation of the patient’s therapeutic regimen.
