Pegvisomant

Meaning

Pegvisomant is a specialized pharmaceutical agent classified as a growth hormone receptor antagonist, clinically used in the management of acromegaly, a disorder characterized by excessive growth hormone (GH) secretion. This synthetic analog of human growth hormone is engineered to block the action of endogenous GH. By inhibiting GH signaling, Pegvisomant effectively lowers the circulating levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), which is the primary mediator of GH’s effects.
