PDMP Checks

Meaning

PDMP Checks refer to the mandated clinical procedure of consulting a state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) database before prescribing or dispensing controlled substances. The PDMP is an electronic database that tracks all Schedule II-V controlled substance prescriptions dispensed within a state, providing prescribers with a patient’s prescription history. This essential clinical tool is designed to prevent drug diversion, identify patients who may be engaging in “doctor shopping,” and mitigate the risks associated with opioid and other controlled substance misuse. For hormonal therapies like testosterone, which is a controlled substance, these checks are a required component of responsible clinical oversight.
