PDE5 Inhibitors

Meaning

PDE5 Inhibitors are a class of pharmaceutical agents that selectively block the activity of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is primarily responsible for the degradation of cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate (cGMP) in smooth muscle cells. By preventing the breakdown of cGMP, these inhibitors prolong the vasodilatory effects of nitric oxide (NO), leading to smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow in specific tissues. Clinically, they are most recognized for treating erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, where enhanced vascular endothelial function is the desired therapeutic outcome. These agents offer a targeted approach to improving circulation and tissue perfusion.
