PDA

Meaning

PDA, or Patent Ductus Arteriosus, represents a congenital cardiovascular anomaly where a fetal blood vessel, the ductus arteriosus, connecting the aorta and pulmonary artery, fails to close spontaneously after birth. This persistent communication allows a left-to-right shunting of oxygenated blood from the higher-pressure aorta into the lower-pressure pulmonary circulation, thereby increasing blood flow to the lungs beyond physiological requirements.
