PCBs

Meaning

PCBs, or Polychlorinated Biphenyls, are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) recognized globally as potent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) due to their environmental stability and bioaccumulation in the food chain. Although largely banned from production, these lipophilic compounds continue to pose a chronic exposure risk that impacts numerous physiological systems. Clinical relevance centers on their documented adverse effects on thyroid function, reproductive health, and neurodevelopment, often mimicking or blocking natural hormones.
