Pattern Recognition Receptors

Meaning

Pattern Recognition Receptors are a fundamental component of the innate immune system, serving as cellular sentinels that detect conserved molecular structures characteristic of invading microorganisms, known as Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns, and indicators of cellular distress or damage, termed Danger-Associated Molecular Patterns. These receptors are strategically located on the surface or within the cytoplasm of diverse cell types, including various immune cells and epithelial cells, acting as the initial line of defense to identify potential threats and initiate a protective host response.
