Patient-Specific Compounding

Meaning

Patient-Specific Compounding is the professional practice wherein a licensed pharmacist, under the direction of a valid prescription, combines, mixes, or alters drug ingredients to create a medication tailored to the unique clinical needs of an individual patient. This practice is utilized when a commercially manufactured, FDA-approved drug is unsuitable or unavailable. The resultant preparation is a custom therapeutic solution intended only for the prescribed patient.
