Patient Access to Medicine

Meaning

A complex public health and policy concept referring to the timely and reliable ability of individuals to obtain necessary, safe, and effective pharmaceutical products and medical care. This access is determined by a multitude of factors, including the availability of the medicine in the supply chain, its affordability for the patient, and the patient’s ability to physically reach a healthcare provider who can prescribe it. Ensuring equitable access is a fundamental goal of global health systems and directly impacts population health outcomes.
