Pathological Hypertrophy

Meaning

Pathological hypertrophy refers to the abnormal enlargement of an organ or tissue due to an increase in the size of its individual cells, rather than an increase in cell number. This process occurs in response to chronic stress or disease states, often leading to impaired organ function over time. Unlike physiological hypertrophy, which is a beneficial adaptation, pathological hypertrophy represents a maladaptive response.
