Pasireotide

Meaning

Pasireotide is a synthetic, long-acting somatostatin analogue (SSA) characterized by its unique multi-receptor binding profile, specifically its high affinity for somatostatin receptor subtype 5 (SSTR5). Clinically, this drug is primarily used to treat Cushing’s disease and acromegaly, both conditions resulting from hormone hypersecretion by pituitary tumors. Its therapeutic efficacy stems from its ability to suppress the abnormal secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in Cushing’s disease and growth hormone (GH) in acromegaly more potently than older somatostatin analogues. The drug is administered via injection and is a cornerstone of medical therapy for these complex endocrine disorders.
