Partial Agonism

Meaning

Partial agonism describes a pharmacological phenomenon where a substance binds to a specific receptor and activates it, but only produces a partial biological response compared to a full agonist, even when all available receptors are occupied. This means the compound possesses intrinsic activity, but its maximum efficacy is inherently limited, never reaching the full potential effect achievable by the body’s natural ligands or other full therapeutic agents.
