PARP1

Meaning

PARP1, or Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1, is a highly abundant nuclear enzyme that functions as an immediate sensor and repair initiator for single-strand breaks in the cellular DNA. This enzyme is fundamentally important for maintaining genomic stability, which is a hallmark of cellular longevity and healthy function. Excessive activation of PARP1, often due to significant DNA damage from oxidative stress or chronic inflammation, can deplete cellular energy stores and lead to cellular senescence or death. Modulating PARP1 activity is a key target in anti-aging research.
