Parenteral Estrogen

Meaning

Parenteral estrogen refers to the administration of estrogenic hormones via a route that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and the initial hepatic metabolism, such as transdermal patches, gels, or injections. This method of delivery results in a more direct entry of the hormone into the systemic circulation, mimicking the natural ovarian secretion profile more closely than oral formulations. Clinically, parenteral estrogen is often preferred for hormone replacement therapy due to a potentially reduced risk of adverse effects, including a lower impact on hepatic protein synthesis and coagulation factors. It provides a stable and predictable physiological delivery of the hormone.
