Parasympathetic Down-Regulation

Meaning

The deliberate or physiological process of decreasing the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the branch responsible for “rest and digest” functions, typically to allow for a temporary dominance of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). While the goal in stress management is usually PNS up-regulation, a temporary down-regulation is a natural part of the transition to a state of high alert or physical exertion. The term can also refer to an undesirable chronic state where the PNS is suppressed due to persistent stress, leading to autonomic imbalance. Clinically, the focus is on assessing and restoring appropriate balance.
