Papilledema

Meaning

Papilledema is a clinical condition characterized by swelling of the optic disc, which is the point where the optic nerve enters the eyeball, due to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). This finding is a critical sign of a serious underlying neurological or systemic pathology, and it requires immediate clinical investigation. While not a hormonal disorder itself, papilledema can be a severe adverse effect associated with the use of certain endocrine-modulating agents, particularly growth hormone or high-dose retinoids, which can transiently increase ICP. Recognizing this ophthalmological sign is paramount for patient safety during specific hormonal therapies.
