Pancreatic Islet Plasticity

Meaning

Pancreatic islet plasticity refers to the remarkable adaptive capacity of the islets of Langerhans, the hormone-secreting cell clusters within the pancreas, to dynamically alter their mass, cellular composition, and functional output in response to chronic metabolic demands. This adaptive ability includes the potential for beta cells to proliferate or change their secretory capacity in response to sustained insulin resistance or the potential for transdifferentiation of other islet cell types. This concept is central to understanding the progression, compensation, and potential reversibility of type 2 diabetes.
