Pancreatic Islet Cells

Meaning

Pancreatic Islet Cells, also formally known as the Islets of Langerhans, are highly specialized clusters of endocrine cells dispersed throughout the exocrine tissue of the pancreas. These cellular islands are physiologically vital as they constitute the body’s primary mechanism for glucose homeostasis. They are responsible for the precise synthesis and immediate secretion of crucial metabolic hormones, most notably insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin, directly into the portal circulation. The functional integrity of these cells is paramount for systemic metabolic health.
