Pain Modulation

Meaning

Pain modulation refers to the physiological process by which the central nervous system actively regulates the intensity, duration, and perception of nociceptive signals. This complex system involves descending pathways from the brainstem that can either inhibit (analgesia) or enhance (hyperalgesia) the transmission of pain signals at the level of the spinal cord. Effective pain management in clinical practice often targets these endogenous modulatory pathways to restore balance.
