P75NTR Signaling

Meaning

P75NTR Signaling refers to the signal transduction pathway initiated by the p75 neurotrophin receptor, a low-affinity, promiscuous receptor for all neurotrophins, including the pro-forms of these factors. Unlike the high-affinity Trk receptors which typically promote survival, p75NTR signaling is often associated with pro-apoptotic pathways, neuronal death, and axon degeneration, particularly when bound to pro-neurotrophins. This receptor acts as a critical molecular switch, dictating whether a neuron receives a survival or a death signal depending on the local concentration of mature versus pro-neurotrophins. Clinically, modulating this signaling is a target for neuroprotective strategies in various neurological conditions.
