P450scc Enzyme Activity

Meaning

P450scc Enzyme Activity refers to the catalytic function of the cytochrome P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme, which performs the initial, rate-limiting step in the synthesis of all steroid hormones. This enzyme, also known as CYP11A1, is located on the inner mitochondrial membrane of steroidogenic cells and is responsible for cleaving the six-carbon side chain from cholesterol, converting it into pregnenolone. The level of its activity is the primary determinant of the overall flux of the steroidogenesis pathway, directly controlling the total steroid output.
