P450scc Enzyme

Meaning

The P450scc Enzyme, formally known as Cholesterol Side-Chain Cleavage Enzyme or CYP11A1, is the rate-limiting and initial enzyme in the complex biochemical pathway of steroidogenesis. This mitochondrial enzyme catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol into pregnenolone, the foundational precursor molecule for all subsequent steroid hormones, including glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids like androgens and estrogens. Its activity is tightly regulated by trophic hormones such as ACTH and LH, making it a critical control point in the endocrine system.
