Oxytocinergic Neurons

Meaning

Oxytocinergic Neurons are specialized nerve cells located predominantly within the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus, which synthesize and release the neuropeptide oxytocin. These neurons are critical components of the neuroendocrine system, projecting axons to the posterior pituitary gland for systemic release into the bloodstream. They are fundamentally involved in regulating social bonding, stress response attenuation, reproductive functions, and maternal behavior. Their function is essential for both physiological homeostasis and complex behavioral regulation.
